Grand Maestro Mohs

Tear is part of the Intelligence Division in the first platoon of the Oracle Knights, following the orders of Grand Maestro Mohs. Though Tear originally thinks very highly of him, I believe that she is subconsciously using him as an excuse for a few things. Originally, she takes up the job of finding the Seventh Fonstone under his orders in order to go to the Outer Lands and kill Van. Tear still takes her job seriously, and remains confidential about any information that is reserved for his ears only.

I like to call Grand Maestro Mohs a “more efficient blinding”, as he is to Tear as the statue at the college in Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man that symbolized the college was to the Narrator. In the novel, the statue was a person bending over with a veil, and supposedly another was lifting it up. The narrator has a hard time deciding whether the veil is really being lifted, or if it is being put on more securely – thus a more efficient blinding. Tear refuses to believe Mohs has anything to do with starting a war between Malkuth and Kimlasca, and will not listen to anyone accusing him otherwise. She blames everything on Van because she does not trust him, and only thinks of Mohs as a kind, sweet man. Much like how the Narrator in Invisible Man views the college, Tear fully believes in Mohs and is blinded to what the reality of the situation is. She does not see that Mohs is completely obsessed with the Score, and is trying to start the war between the two empires in order to fulfill what it says.

Similarly to the Narrator being called a traitor to his race, Tear is accused of being a spy and other such things because she remains so loyal to Mohs when evidence is pointing to him for trying to start a war. Eventually, Tear is forced to realize that what she has been told is correct. Mohs is so devoted to the Score that he is willing to do whatever it says, even if it involves deaths of many innocent people in an unnecessary war. He later loses his body and turns into a monster when injected with Seventh Fonons. He ultimately loses control of his body and ability to think and speak because he cannot handle the injection, and dies loving the Score as much as he did in the beginning.

Tear comes to regret being so blinded by following his orders without seeing the truth behind the situation, but says that all Oracle Knights are somewhat at fault for following the Score so closely. Tear takes responsibility for being blinded and looks at it as a lesson learned for the future.
