Legretta the Quick
When Legretta fails to defeat Van, she becomes an instructor to his younger sister, Tear, while she was just training to become an Oracle Knight. Thusly, the two form a teacher-student relationship. Though Tear is her student, the two form a mutual respect for each other, especially in Tear's eyes. She really admires Legretta's skill, but that is only to be expected from a student who has a really good teacher. It is obvious that Legretta trained Tear, as if you look closely, you can see some of Legretta in Tear. Though they are both trained to act as soldiers, they still tend to be similar in personality. I would not doubt that Tear tried to model herself after her instructor because she respected her so much.
Though Tear has the high respect for Legretta, she also knows how devoted her instructor is to her Van. So, despite many attempts by Legretta to get Tear to join her, she refuses because she does not trust her brother. Van is the one that ultimately ends up splitting the two women apart, as they cannot agree on ideals. Tear refuses to except Van's logic, but Legretta embraces it and works to achieve it. This ultimately makes them enemies, and even though they do not wish to fight each other, Tear leaves Legretta with little choice.
Before the final battle with Legretta, Tear tells her she has lost all respect for her because she appears to Tear as having no will of her own. After Legretta is defeated, she tries to explain to Tear that her will was to give everything she had to Van and his ideals because she loved him. I believe that Legretta did not want to lose Tear's respect, and used her last words to try and explain to her that she was not mindless. Once Legretta dies, Tear says they have no time for emotions and she cannot show any because she would be a poor soldier otherwise. In a way, that is just Tear's personality, but as Jade partially points out, it would make Legretta's death mean nothing. She tries to hold a strong front because that is how Legretta, her instructor, taught her to act. In the end, I do not think Tear lost her respect for Legretta, and though she may not have understood Legretta's feelings fully, really was upset by having to kill her.
Likewise, it is pretty obvious that Legretta wants Tear's well being and cares for her as well. She puts off fighting Tear for a very long time, and even after fighting her once, she still does not fight back when Tear tries to attack her a few times. She wants Tear to join her and Van, especially once she finds out Tear is poisoned by miasma. Legretta is concerned that Tear will kill herself if she continues to go on while being poisoned, and repeatedly asks her if it is all really worth it to her. Although, I think Legretta can understand why Tear continues anyway because she herself does the same thing. She makes personal sacrifices for Van and what she believes in, and Tear is simply doing the same. Unfortunately, Legretta's patience only runs so long, and she is forced to give in and fight Tear to the death. Anyone who stood in the way of Van became an enemy of hers, even if she did not want it.
Ultimately, though I do not think Legretta regrets her decision to follow Van and make Tear an enemy, she does apologize in a letter she writes for her. As long as you complete all the flashback events when Tear was training with Legretta, after going to Eldrant for the first time Legretta leaves a note on Van's grave in Yulia City. Tear reads the note explaining how Legretta met Van and what her story was behind working for him to see that it is signed "Giselle Oslo". Legretta tells Tear her true name, and she completely breaks down after reading it. Tear rarely loses her composure, just like her instructor, but she loses it then. Tear cares for Legretta a great amount, and to have her trust her true name to Tear meant a lot to her. The two women were forced on opposite sides in the end, but I would argue their relationship did not really change in principle otherwise.
