Introduction
Tales of the Abyss follows the story of a young male named Luke fone Fabre. He is the son of Duke Fabre and lives comfortably in his manor. Due to a kidnapping incident in the past, Luke has no recollection of his life from before he was returned to the Fabre manor. Luke is also not allowed outside the manor walls for his own safety. Therefore, the only highlight in the teenage boy’s life is his training sessions with his teacher, Van Grants. However, one day changes Luke’s life forever…During a training session with Van, a woman infiltrates the manor and tries to kill Van. Luke jumps to defend his teacher, colliding with the woman. The two get transported far away from the manor, leaving Luke unconscious. When he wakes up, he finds out the woman’s name is Tear. She promises that she will escort him back to the Fabre manor, as she believes it is her fault he was brought away from home since she was careless. Luke demands to know why she was trying to kill Van, but she refuses to speak. During their journey back to the Fabre Manor, Luke and Tear find themselves wrapped up in a much bigger situation with the addition of Fon Master Ion, Colonel Jade Curtiss and the young Anise Tatlin. Luke just wants to return home, but it may be awhile before he can do so…and not without some difficult realizations and lessons learned…
Tales of the Abyss, released by NAMCO, is a relatively new role-playing game in America for Playstation 2. It can be a one-player game, or have up to four players at a time. The playable characters are:
• Luke fone Fabre - Swordsman
• Tear Grants - Melodist
• Jade Curtiss - Fonist
• Anise Tatlin - Puppet Master
• Guy Cecil - Swordsman
• Natalia Luzu Kimlasca Lanvaldear - Archer
The main antagonists are a special group of the Oracle Knights called the God-Generals, led by Van Grants. Luke and his friends must put a stop to their plans before it is too late to save the world from a twisted fate.
Overall, I think Tales of the Abyss is an absolutely stunning game. If you have yet to try it, I highly suggest you to pick it up, as it is tons of fun. The plot is interesting and all of the characters are amazing. It will keep you playing for hours (or it did for me anyway), and I would definitely rate the game five out of five stars. Tales of the Abyss is also a novel and manga series in Japan as well, but I have not read enough of either to comment on those.
