Worlds

In Tales of Symphonia, there are two worlds that exist separately, yet are very much connected. Sylvarant is the world in which the game begins in, and where Lloyd, Collete, Genis, and Raine live. Throughout majority of the game, Sylvarant is in a period of decline, which is why Colette is on her journey of regeneration. Tethe'alla is the other world that exists parallel to Sylvarant, home to Sheena, Regal, Presea and Zelos. Since Sylvarant is in decline, Tethe'alla is undergoing a period of prosperity. This is how the connection between the two worlds works. The two worlds have to compete for mana, so when one is in prosperity, it is sucking the mana from the world that is in decline. Colette regenerating Sylvarant would be disastrous to Tethe'alla, which is why Sheena was assigned to assassinate her. The same would be for Sylvarant if Tethe'alla's chosen, Zelos, regenerated his world.

The worlds were not always this way, and they actually existed as one. After a pact with Origin was formed, Mithos had him create the Eternal Sword. He used it to cut the world in two, thus forming Sylvarant and Tethe'alla. The journey of regeneration on both worlds is really just one of Mithos' schemes in order to get the perfect vessel to use as his sister Martel's new body. Mithos does not care about what happens to one of the worlds, as long as he can resurrect Martel.

Lloyd and company use the Rheairds to travel between the two worlds when needed. After realizing the connection between the worlds, Lloyd and the others change their goals to find a way to save both worlds without sacrificing anyone else. Lloyd ends up being able to wield the Eternal Sword, after much pain and mysterious intentions by Kratos, and is able to reunite the two worlds once more. He then uses it to re-grow the giant Kharlan Tree and provide the new world with enough mana to flourish.
