Exspheres

You've probably heard a lot about these "Exspheres" by now, and may be wondering what they are. They are what a lot of the main characters (Lloyd, Genis, Raine, Kratos, Sheena, Presea and Regal) use to aid their fighting. It enhances their abilities above the human level, giving them the edge in battle.

EX gems can be loaded to the Exsphere, allowing different types of abilities to be learned (EX Skills). Though Kratos does not have an Exsphere himself, his EX skills can be read about here.

Exspheres are mass-produced in places called human ranches. People from various towns and cities are forced to relocate to these ranches (usually named after a nearby town) where they are worked almost to death. These are the conditions under which Exspheres grow within a human (host body). These people, however, are given Exspheres without key crests, which is very dangerous to the wearer. Without it being mounted on a key crest, the mana in the person's body goes out of control, and they are turned into uncontrollable monster, which are then are killed for the Exsphere.

Lloyd and the others realize that Exspheres allow them to continue their journey, but it is at the cost of someone else's life. They would not be able to survive during their journey without them, but they all, especially Lloyd, do not agree with the fact that another human life has to be taken in order to create them. One of the main "new" goals of the Chosen's group is to get rid of the Exspheres, and they end up destroying all the human ranches that come in their path in order to do so. Living at the cost of another's life is something that bears weight and strength on the group while they undergo their journey.
