Seraphim

Seraphim are referred to in different respects depending on what religious background you are looking at. The Christian religion take on Seraphim seems to have the closest connection to Kratos' role, so this page will be "based" off that take.

The Seraphim are the highest level of the hierarchy of angels. Angels are already "higher" than most beings in Tales of Symphonia, making Kratos almost like a high-ranking being. As a Seraph, Kratos is able to live for an abnormal amount of time. He is already over four thousand years old. It is never said that he can live forever, but going back to the religion interpretation, Seraphim are immortal. They are said to be mainly concerned with keeping Divinity in perfect order. Kratos is not really interested in keeping "Divinity" in order, but he wants to fix the chaos the worlds have fallen in. A medieval writer named Pseudo-Dionysius wrote about Seraphim in his Celestial Hierarchy (vii):
"The name Seraphim clearly indicates their ceaseless and eternal revolution about Divine Principles, their heat and keenness, the exuberance of their intense, perpetual, tireless activity, and their alleviative and energetic assimilation of those below, kindling them and firing them to their own heat, and wholly purifying them by a burning and all- consuming flame; and by the unhidden, unquenchable, changeless, radiant and enlightening power, dispelling and destroying the shadows of darkness" (Celesial Hierarchy, vii).
You could connect this to Kratos' personality based on the fact that he is constantly working to find a way for Lloyd to wield the Eternal Sword, which in this case is for the purpose of reforming the worlds. Kratos is also quite powerful, and tries to use that power to aid in ridding the world of the "shadow" of suffering and pain. I know this is quite a stretch in a way, but Kratos really has the qualities of being a Seraph if you look at it symbolically.
