Relationships

Kratos has a few other important relationships other than his family. I will address them here, though they are not as major in his life as Lloyd or Anna.

COLETTE BRUNEL – Kratos was hired to aid Raine in protecting Colette on her journey of regeneration, mainly because there was little other choice. Colette trusts him and treats him with the same kindness as she does everyone else. She also thinks he is amazing in battle as well as very smart. Kratos has other intentions though, as he is really working for Mithos and just wants to ensure she makes it to the Tower of Salvation in order for Martel to be revived. Along the way, I think Colette teaches Kratos some emotions he had been missing for many years, as she tends to do with everyone she travels with. Her kindness and attachment to Lloyd surprise him to a certain extent, and he does not really understand. I even think it would be safe to say that Colette reminds him of Anna, only because Lloyd tries so hard to protect her. Kratos makes some sort of comment to Lloyd telling him to protect her or else she will be taken from him again, which I think he is remembering the whole accident with Anna’s key crest being taken away and her turning into a monster he was forced to kill. Yeah, arguably he is telling this to Lloyd so he does not suffer, but I think Kratos does not want Colette to have a similar fate to Anna. I believe that not only Lloyd reminds Kratos of his past, but Colette as well for this reason.

RAINE SAGE – Ahh, the popular pairing in the fan community for whatever reason. Though I have addressed this issue more on this page, I will write a bit more here as well. Raine and Kratos were the original two assigned to protect Colette on her journey of regeneration. They are mature, logical, calm and intelligent, which I guess is why the fans pair them off. Either way, Raine does not trust Kratos because she cannot tell what his true motives are and he appears to have a large amount of knowledge on a variety of subjects. That is not to say much though because Raine does not trust many people at first, and people have to work to gradually gain her trust. Kratos and Raine hardly ever talk on their own, and when they do, it is usually concerning Lloyd or what the party should do next. They are the adults of the group and tend to look out for everyone else. Other than that, I really do not think they have a possibility of becoming anything more than formal friends. Both of them are too reserved, not to mention Kratos is completely devoted to Anna for anything else to occur.

MITHOS YGGDRASIL – Kratos was originally one of the four Seraphim with Mithos, Martel and Yuan. One can only assume that the three of them were pretty good friends as they traveled around together. However, after the death of Martel, Mithos began to change. He set up the Church of Martel and the whole Chosen of Regeneration scam in attempts to revive his lost sister. After meeting Anna, Kratos realized what Mithos was doing was wrong, and attempted to run away from him. After they were pursued and Anna was killed, Kratos returned to Mithos because he had nothing left and his life was meaningless to him. Kratos works for Mithos for a good portion of the game, but after meeting Lloyd again, his loyalty begins to turn. Mithos realizes this and does not give his old friend any mercy when they turn blades against each other. In a way, I think Mithos is saddened that Kratos betrays him. Whether or not it is because Yuan is not on his side either and he is left alone, I do not know, but he seems sad beneath his angry exterior. I’m sure the four Seraphim had a bond of sorts, and since Kratos was the only one remaining with him, it probably hurt him that his last friend left as well. Either way, Mithos acted as a blinding of Kratos’ true vision for a long period of time, and Kratos cannot forgive him for his actions. At one time, I think Kratos believed and respected Mithos’ ideals, but after he became obsessed with reviving Martel, Kratos just could not accept following him any longer.
